Cipriani Ordered To Change Name

December 10, 2008 by Rob Powell

Mayfair restaurant, Cipriani London, has been ordered by a High Court to change its name. The case was brought by the Hotel Cipriani in Italy, which originally founded (and subsequently sold) by the same Cipriani family that has now been barred from using their own name on other establishments.

The Davies Street haunt is a favourite of many celebrities, including the Beckhams and Elton John. Mr Justice Arnold ruled that the use of the Cipriani name infringed the Orient-Express trademark and could cause confusion. The Cipriani family has said it will appeal.
