Claridge’s grew out of a number of houses being joined up for use as a hotel. By the end of the 19th century, the hotel lacked the facilities of other newer hotels such as electricity and elevators, so it was demolished and rebuilt in 1898 using a design by C.W. Stephens.

Its reputation as a highly exclusive hotel was sealed by the numerous stays by Royals and heads of state from countries around the world
